Protesters swarm Iran's Grand Bazaar in Tehran

According to the BBC, at one point, Iran's anti-riot police fired tear gas into the crowd of protesters as they marched towards parliament or Majles.

Monday's protests come just days after two of Tehran's largest shopping centres were forced to close due to economic protests.

Protestors are said to be fed up with the Iranian ruling regime's focus on foreign intervention ahead of the country's own economy, which has been even further strained since President Donald Trump walked away from the landmark nuclear agreement and reimposed harsh sanctions on Tehran.

There had been several national and worldwide protests against the long-standing ban on women attending Iranian stadiums.

Iran's semi-official news agency ISNA said the dollar had climbed to 87,000 rials on Sunday from about 74,000 before the weekend on the black market, and several Iranian websites carried similar reports. In the Grand Bazaar, hundreds staged a similar protest, videos posted on social media show.

As the crowd filed through the streets of the capital calling on others to join them, the size of the demonstration swelled into the thousands.

Calling the regime of the ayatollahs to invest in its economy and not to interfere in the Affairs of other countries in the middle East, the demonstrators shouted "Death to Palestine", "Help us, not the Gas" and "Leave Syria alone and sort things out with Iran".

Tehran's large Bazaar has always been a breeding ground for opposition to governments in Iran's history, most recently in 1978, when it shut down in a protest at the rule of the last Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Iran last witnessed mass protests in December, when demonstrations across 75 cities saw more than 5,000 activists arrested and at least 25 killed by security forces.

On Monday, traders protested on the Hafez Bridge in the Iranian capital of Tehran. The protests in late December and early January saw at least 25 people killed and almost 5,000 people arrested by authorities.

Mr Rouhani's government has struggled with the economic problems, which have seen high unemployment. On Monday, state television quoted Iranian Central Bank chief Valiollah Seif as saying the government plans to create a parallel market next week to combat the black market. The official also announced that a system will be established to identify all commodities that have been imported using US dollars at a rate of 42,000 rials, so that importers of those goods can not sell them at higher prices.

Some hard-liners have called for new elections or for a military-led government to replace Rouhani's government.
