Best Twitter reactions after South Korea knock Germany out

In a shocking upset, South Korea has beaten Germany in the World Cup, denying the defending champions a chance to advance beyond the first round.

South Korea blanked defending champions Germany 2-0 in their final Group F match at Kazan Arena in Kazan, some 800 kilometers east of Moscow.

Germany's failure to make the round of 16 came as Mexico went down to eventual Group F leaders Sweden, who smashed the Central Americans 3-0 in Yekaterinburg.

2018 - Germany | a single-goal loss to Mexico wasn't the desired start but a last gasp Kroos goal seemed to get things back on track as they beat Sweden 2-1.

A South Korea soccer fan was mobbed by Mexico fans at Plaza Mexico in Lynwood, California, on June 27, following Germany's shock elimination from the 2018 World Cup. "We were really disappointed, that's why a lot of us cried". While that famous quote by Gary Lineker is not always accurate there is no doubt that when it comes to a World Cup, Germany are invariably amongst the top challengers. So we deserved to be eliminated.

Loew, who was given assurances by the German FA that he will not be sacked on the eve of the decisive meeting with South Korea, was asked whether he would resign. "We will see who feels the less pressure, the less emotional".

South Korea's already slim chances have taken a hit in the buildup to the match when captain Ki Sung-yueng was ruled out with a left calf injury. Initially flagged offside, the goal was finally allowed after a VAR review.

After failing to find a way past superb Korea 'keeper Jo Hyeonwoo in the second half, Germany could only look on in shock as USA referee Mark Geiger called for the video assistant referee to intervene after the unmarked Kim Younggwon had bundled his shot past Neuer from a corner early in stoppage time.

"We decided in the DFB executive committee before the World Cup to offer a contract extension", DFB boss Reinhard Grindel told Frankfurt-based newspaper FAZ.

From 30 yards out, it should have been fodder for World Cup-winning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, but after fumbling Jung's dipping drive Neuer scrambled desperately to clear as Son raced to pounce.

South Korea made it 2-0 three minutes later when, with Neuer in the opposition half, Son sprinted from his own half to latch on a hoofed ball and put the ball into an open goal. The entire German nation - all of us - have lost. Germany now needs to beat South Korea by at least two goals to be guaranteed a spot in the last 16.
