Trump's Supreme Court search begins, with youth a key factor

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy's announcement this week that he would retire from the high court at the end of next month sent shockwaves through political and legal circles, as speculation swirled about who President TrumpDonald John TrumpMike Huckabee: If Trump nominated Moses to the Supreme Court Dems would still be unhappy Trump admin likely to detain migrant families for months during immigration proceedings: report ICE chief to protesters: We're not the ones separating families MORE could tap for his replacement.

Trump got his first Supreme Court pick after McConnell led a Republican blockade against Merrick Garland, former President Barack Obama's nominee to fill Scalia's seat. However, after Kennedy informed the Trump administration he was retiring, even the most keen observers likely didn't realize how the progressive left would respond to that news.

On whether the time was right for a conservative woman to join the court, Trump said: "Could be".

President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump and their son Barron Trump, arrive at Morristown Municipal Airport, in Morristown, N.J., Friday, June 29, 2018.

It's not certain who has made the president's shortlist, but many outlets have reported that Judge Brett Kavanaugh, a former Kennedy clerk, is the frontrunner. He also said he would "probably interview six or seven" candidates all together.

Other women on the list include Joan Larsen, who serves on the federal appeals court in Cincinnati and previously served as a Michigan Supreme Court Justice, and Allison Eid, who serves on the federal appeals court based in Denver and previously served as a Colorado Supreme Court justice.

"That's not a question I'll be asking", he said.

Asked by Fox's Maria Bartiromo whether he would ask potential nominees how they might come down on Roe v. Wade, Trump said: "Well, that's a big one". Asked about Barrett, he said, "She's an outstanding woman". Mike Lee of Utah.

During the candidate vetting the last time, the White House asked all the contenders whom they would pick instead of themselves - and they all said Gorsuch, said the person, who was not authorized to disclose private conversations.

"The fact that there's a modest enthusiasm disadvantage isn't all that meaningful because there's already an enthusiasm gap for Republicans", he said, noting Democratic anger towards Trump. "As long as I can do the job full steam, I will be here", she said in January. "You know, usually they don't say that". Trump welcomed Republicans Chuck Grassley, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Democrats Joe Manchin, Joe Donnelly and Heidi Heitkamp as part of the effort.

Trump met on Thursday with senators from both parties at the White House to discuss the court vacancy created by the retirement of Kennedy, which was announced on Wednesday. "What we're seeing here is Gorsuch 2.0".

But McConnell has insisted Kennedy's successor would be confirmed in the fall and demanded the "president's nominee be considered fairly and not subjected to personal attacks".

"From day one, I've heard, outside of war and peace of course, the most important decision you make is the selection of a Supreme Court judge - if you get it".

"It is exciting though, right?" said Trump.
