President Trump Hopes For Good Ties With New President-Elect Of Mexico

Mexican voters are heading to the polls Sunday in a historic election that could reshape the country.

Vice noted that the newly elected Mexican president has also spoken out about Trump's plans to militarize the border. Sunday's elections for posts at every level of government are Mexico's largest ever and have become a referendum on corruption, graft and other tricks used to divert taxpayer money to officials' pockets and empty those of the country's poor.

Lopez Obrador will take office in December facing a US government that has been openly antagonistic to Mexico over trade and migration under President Donald Trump.

It is a major shift in Mexican politics: the PRI and PAN have governed for almost a century, and Lopez Obrador will be the country's first leftist president in recent history.

The election came amid a backdrop of mounting tensions between Mexico and the United States, which some analysts say have pushed relations between the two countries to one of the most divisive points in recent times.

Some 89 million people are eligible to vote in Sunday's elections, and millennials and the so-called Generation Z are expected to play a key role in defining the country's future.

Voters will expect him to put into concrete action his anti-corruption agenda, reign in rising killings and cartel violence that have stubbornly resisted the efforts of his two predecessors, and revive a sluggish economy that grew just 2.1 per cent a year ago.

Meanwhile, for the first time in a decade and a half, Mexican public opinion of the United States turned overwhelmingly negative.

But on Sunday morning in Mexico City, many people were watching Spain and Russian Federation face off in the World Cup instead of election coverage.

Much remains to be determined about how Lopez Obrador's often nebulous campaign proposals will manifest themselves in government.

Past year the Labour leader went to Mexico to meet Mr Lopez Obrador and they discussed the "dream of realising a world government based on justice and fraternity".

Polls have opened in Mexico's presidential and local elections, and front-running candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is among the first to line up at his polling place in Mexico City. "They shouldn't dare commit a fraud, because if they do they will meet the devil", said Yeidckol Polevnsky, president of Lopez Obrador's Morena party.

In a speech last month, Mr Lopez Obrador vowed to defend migrants and their rights. He lost again in 2012.

Many voters are reportedly sick of the nation's two main political groups: the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the conservative National Action Party (PAN). He's also held multiple seats in public office in the state of Querétaro and served in the lower chamber of Congress. Its candidate, Jose Antonio Meade, has experience in several areas of government - including the treasury and foreign relations departments - and that convinced some voters like Roman Acosta, a doctor from the western city of Morelia. The former governor of the industrial state of Nuevo Leon is known as "El Bronco", or wild horse, for his strong personality.

And what to make of Trump's propensity for erratic behavior in matters involving Mexico?

Of those, 48 were candidates running in the current elections.

Later in the day, a second member of a political party was killed as well.

The violence isn't limited to politicians, either.

On Monday, a day after Canada's counter-tariffs came into effect, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said escalating the tariffs "does nothing to help Canada and only hurts American workers".

He suggested journalists would also cover his back, but jokingly complained that "I have been hit a few times by cameras" and he asked reporters: "Don't squash me".
