More Boys Rescued From Thailand Cave

Four boys and the coach are still to be rescued.

It could be at least seven days before they can be released from hospital, Mr Jesada told a news conference. We've started giving them "medical food" this morning. The distance from where the crew is trapped to the main entrance is about a half a mile, and the boys had to travel most of that distance underwater to reach freedom.

The second group of four rescued on Monday are aged 12 to 14.

All eight boys rescued so far after spending two weeks trapped in a Thai cave are in good health overall and the first four rescued boys are eating well, Thailand's health ministry permanent secretary said on Tuesday.

Alluding to that worry, the regional army commander offered his thanks Monday to the rain god Phra Pirun, imploring him to "keep showing us mercy".

The boys were exploring the caves on June 23 with their coach when they were trapped inside by heavy seasonal rains.

So far 10 boys aged between 12 and 16 have been led out of the cave system by a team of expert divers over two days.

The plight of the boys and their coach has drawn worldwide attention, with divers, engineers and medics among others flying in from around the world to assist.

Tragedy strikes: a diver helping to establish an air line to the boys dies after passing out while returning from the chamber, raising serious doubts over the safety of attempting a rescue. The children reportedly wore full-faced masks while clinging to the bodies of rescue divers. Rescue efforts were then suspended for up to 20 hours because they had used up all the oxygen and needed to replenish supplies.

That left two boys and their 25-year-old coach still inside the cave but authorities were confident of getting them all out by Tuesday evening via a claustrophobic network of tunnels that in some places were completely filled with water. But officials waited several hours before confirming their rescue. Two divers accompanied each of the boys, all of whom have been learning to dive only since July 2, when searchers found them.

"If Phra Pirun helps us, we might be able to do it very quickly", Narongsak said, again invoking the god of rain, who is widely revered in Thailand.

The death Friday of a former Thai navy SEAL underscored the risks.

"There's a likelihood of resilience, assuming everyone comes out, there's no fatalities, I think the worst is behind them", Adesman said.

He attributed the improvement of the extraction mission with lesser time spent to the increased experience with the terrain of the divers, the 100 plus people from different countries who installed the base line and the other support equipment.

The other, and perhaps more worrying, was that oxygen levels in the complex were falling close to risky levels.

That sense of accomplishment was also reflected in the message posted Monday night on the Thai Navy SEALS's Facebook page announcing the latest rescues.
