Pompeo seeks to reassure lawmakers on Russian Federation amid bipartisan backlash

Top officials have been growing nervous since the White House announced that Russian president Vladimir Putin has been invited to Washington this fall.

Bolton said they agreed the meeting would be "after the first of the year".

Last week, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump had directed Bolton to extend an invitation to Putin to visit Washington later this year, days after the two met for a controversial summit in Helsinki, Finland.

The U.S. intelligence community determined in January 2017 that Russian Federation sought to interfere in the election in a bid to undercut Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.




Rubio is part of the Senate Intelligence Committee and urges the U.S.to prevent future attacks from Russian intelligence, citing that the discoveries made by Robert Mueller and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are "100 percent accurate".

Russia's Embassy in Washington has accused USA officials of "living in a different reality" after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reiterated America's rejection of Moscow's annexation of Crimea.

He noted that the administration had just days ago provided the Ukraine government with an additional $200 million in military equipment and maintained that the administration was serious about combatting Russian interference in the US and Western democracies.
