Harldey-Davidson plans smaller bike with eye on India

According to Harley Davidson, the bike will have a commanding riding position which will allow the rider to "see the world from another point of view", while having the ability to "travel coast-to-coast". As it turns out, it won't come until 2019, but the company has way more up its sleeve than just a single electric bike.

Next year, Harley Davidson will launch its electric cruiser motorcycle - the LiveWire.

Iconic American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson unveiled on Monday a global growth plan to revamp its USA business with new products and cost-cutting measures, while also expanding internationally.

Little is now known about Harley Davidson's Pan America, other than it's being tipped for a launch in early 2020, and it will feature an all-new 1250cc engine.

The company said LiveWire will be followed by more "twist and go" electric two-wheelers over the next few years, with lighter and smaller models already planned.

Zackfia added that the new products are a significant departure from Harley's signature style and are likely to raise questions as to whether the means of attracting new customers could alienate the core.

To help bring their bikes to more riders, the company is also targeting an update of the company web portal and new retail formats like smaller urban stores.

The announcement by Harley comes after three consecutive years of declining sales in India. There's also an e-bike and scooter concept, both of which reference Harley-Davidson's sensible commuter options (many of them rebadged Euro machines) which were common enough until the Japanese took over the market in force in the late '60s and early '70s, with cheaper, more reliable options.

Harley last week forecast a lower-than-expected hit to profit margins from Trump's trade tariffs, despite rising raw materials costs and higher tariffs on bikes shipped to Europe.

Speaking with CNBC, Levatich said that riding the LiveWire "is a different feeling".

Harley has also been spending on product development and marketing, including promoting its learn-to-ride academies at showrooms and developing electric motorcycle technology.

Developing a more accessible, small-displacement (250cc to 500cc) motorcycle for Asia emerging markets through a planned strategic alliance with a manufacturer in Asia. Another key part of this bold project is partnering with an Indian manufacturer to create a "small displacement motorcycle bridge" for HD.
