Arduous road ahead for Zimbabwe after election results

On Wednesday, not long after Zimbabwe's electoral commission announced that the ruling party was on course for a landslide win in parliamentary elections, opposition protesters marched to the commission's headquarters in the capital, Harare.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission's decision to delay announcing the results of the presidential race at least until Thursday - three days after the vote - seemed certain to bring more opposition anger if President Emmerson Mnangagwa is declared the victor.

More 58 constituencies are yet to be declared, but ZANU-PF only needs 140 seats to the garner the 2/3 majority in Parliament.

"We have been in communication with Nelson Chamisa to discuss how to immediately diffuse the situation, and we must maintain this dialogue in order to protect the peace we hold dear".

Police officers armed with riot gear guard the entrance to the building where partial election results have been announced in Harare, Zimbabwe. Presidential election results are not yet out.

Biti said this omission gave room for the ZEC, which ZESN and the opposition have accused of bias, to manipulate the results in favour of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the ruling ZANU-PF party.

The assessments are critical for Zimbabwe, because foreign governments, including the USA, have made any financial aid conditional on holding democratic elections.

Even before the violence, European Union observers questioned the conduct of the presidential and parliamentary vote, the first since Mr Mugabe's forced resignation after almost 40 years in charge of the southern African nation.

Zimbabwe was once one of Africa's most promising economies but under Mugabe's rule became tainted by corruption, mismanagement and diplomatic isolation. "If President Chamisa wins this election then the people of Zimbabwe will have their government".

"Of the 153, ZANU-PF has won 110 seats, while the MDC Alliance got 41 seats", ZBC state media reported. "No amount of results manipulation will alter your will", he tweeted before the army was deployed on Wednesday.

A Reuters witness saw soldiers with sticks beat two people and counted at least five trucks full of soldiers.

The website of the election commission, which is expected to start announcing presidential election results on Thursday, was offline after being taken out by unidentified hackers overnight.

Channel 4 News' Jonathan Miller, said: "We moved with the surging crowd".

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has announced it is not yet sure when the commission will announce the results of the presidential election.

Pfigu said he was optimistic on election day for the country's first vote without Mugabe, who ruled for almost four decades, on the ballot.

"We are exhausted of them stealing our votes".

MDC Alliance's Tendai Biti said there was a clear attempt by Zanu-PF to interfere "with the people's will". Nick Mangwana, ZANU-PF spokesman, stated that the party was happy with the results. "Let me also warn such individuals and groups that no one is above the law", Home Affairs Minister Obert Mpofu said.
