Firefighters outflank California blaze, last four missing found alive

The fire near Covelo prompted evacuation orders for about 60 homes in the farming and ranching area on the edge of the Mendocino National Forest. The nearby Ranch Fire also broke out Friday and has burned almost 75,000 acres.

"We are making headway and we are feeling optimistic if we can just get a change in the weather", said Cal Fire spokesperson Sean Kavanaugh. They are 24 percent contained.

Covelo is a highly rural area in northern Mendocino County, east of Highway 101.

With a red flag warning posted for this evening through Saturday, firefighters are continuing to be challenged by the Carr Fire, which now stands at 125,842 acres and remains at 35 percent containment.

With more than 20 active fires small and very large tearing across the state, California Gov.

CalFire director Ken Pimlott said more than 32,000 remained displaced by various fires up and down the state.




Farther south, the Mendocino Complex Fire is threatening more structures.

At a separate news conference on Wednesday, Governor Jerry Brown said the Carr Fire typified a "new normal" authorities are encountering, as large, extremely intense and swiftly spreading wildfires occur more often over a longer fire season.

Strong gusts began kicking up again on Wednesday night across upper ridge lines of the fire's mountainous western flank, where the blaze, sparked by a vehicle malfunction on July 23, was burning largely unchecked.

Along with a bulldozer contract employee and a Redding firefighter killed in the Carr Fire, the captain of a wildland hotshots team and a Cal Fire heavy equipment operator have been killed in the Ferguson fire burning near Yosemite in Mariposa County.

On Thursday, a special contingent of 100 firefighters from Australia and New Zealand took off from Sydney en route to USA assignments reinforcing exhausted fire crews in northern California, Oregon and Washington state.
