NASA to announce first astronauts to fly SpaceX and Boeing ships

NASA released an updated schedule of commercial crew test flights August 2 that confirms Boeing's revised plans as well as delays for SpaceX's two demonstration missions.

Congress ultimately boosted NASA's overall budget for the fiscal year that began on October 1 to almost $20.7 billion, part of a defense spending binge that also benefited nondefense projects.

NASA-released renderings of SpaceX's Crew Dragon and Boeing's CST-100 Starliner spacecraft. That schedule calls for an uncrewed test flight in late 2018 or early 2019, followed by a crewed test flight in mid-2019.

NASA is all prepared to declare the names of the astronauts allocated to the new commercial crew capsules from SpaceX and Boeing, early next month.

NASA's Commercial Crew Program is working with the American aerospace industry as companies develop and operate a new generation of spacecraft and launch systems created to carry crews safely to and from low-Earth orbit.

While the space agency has remained secretive about who might get picked for the honor of taking the first rides on board Boeing's Starliner and SpaceX's Crew Dragon, perhaps so as not to spoil the great surprise, NASA officials did tell the Business Insider that only astronauts who are not now assigned to a space mission are eligible for the test flights of the brand-new spacecraft.

If this second test is successful, Boeing will launch Spacecraft 2 along with its first passengers toward the middle of 2019.

The crew assigned to fly on the company's Crew Dragon will liftoff aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from historic pad 39A.

News 6 is at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston for the announcement Friday morning. Boeing's spacecraft - the Starliner - will be carried into space by an Atlas 5 rocket built by United Launch Alliance (ULA), a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

During the manned tests, the astronauts will be able to use the displays inside the spacecraft, communicate with mission control and practise manual controls during flight. Two companies are vying to replace the Russians with a US spacecraft: Boeing Co. SpaceX is targeting April 2019 for its crewed demonstration flight, Demo-2. In this simulation, DOD pararescue specialists jumped from military aircraft, parachuted to the water, and simulated stabilizing the Crew Dragon capsule and safely removing astronauts from the spacecraft. The company said it has identified the root cause of that incident and will make both operational and technical changes to ensure the valves close properly in the future.

The crews will begin training to get ready for their launch.

Mulholland added that he has no "visibility into SpaceX progress or the fidelity of the SpaceX schedule", and that they only focus on making "sure we do everything we can to ensure a safe vehicle and meeting the schedule parameters that I've laid out".
