Widely Watched Ohio House Race Too Close to Call

The New York Times gave Mr Balderson 50.2%, a lead of 1,754 votes in the 12th Congressional District race, with all precincts reporting. "He never stops working", Trump said of Balderson, a former Ironman race competitor.

Trump won the district by 11 percentage points in the White House race in 2016 and Republican Pat Tiberi won re-election to the House by a whopping 37 percentage points.

The best barometer for November's midterm elections came in OH, where the contest in a congressional district near Columbus that Republicans have held for three decades was too close to call.

There are 79 House races this fall considered more competitive than the OH district - at least looking at Trump's 2016 performance - according to data compiled by the Democrats' national campaign committee.

The Republican president's shadow also loomed over primary contests in four other states, none bigger than Kansas, where Trump roiled the governor's race by opposing the GOP incumbent on the eve of the election.

Though they united to defeat a common enemy, Kasich's opposition to Trump came up in the final days of the race. It is the last congressional special election scheduled before the November midterms.

The central OH race was the marquee contest on a day when four other states held nominating contests, including a battle for governor in MI in which a mainstream candidate beat a progressive and a high-profile conservative challenge to the incumbent Republican governor in Kansas.

In deep-red Kansas ' Republican gubernatorial primary, the candidate Trump backed on the eve of the election, Secretary of State Kris Kobach, was neck and neck with current Republican Gov. Jeff Colyer. OH is one of the key battleground states in the mid-terms. But at least 3,367 provisional ballots are still outstanding, which could lead Mr O'Connor to force a recount.

Balderson and O'Connor will face off again in November to fill the next two-year term.

Hours before polls opened, Trump again weighed in on Twitter, casting James as "a potential Republican star".

Whitmer will face Republican Bill Schuette, who was endorsed by Trump, in November.

In Missouri, Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill claimed her party's nomination, while state Attorney General Josh Hawley will represent the GOP.

Indeed, Ms Whitmer could lead an all-female Democratic state-wide ticket in MI against Mr Schuette. However, most of the votes in Johnson County, the state's most populous county, had yet to be counted, according to the Kansas elections website. Other top candidates include Sharice Davids, an EMILY's List-endorsed former MMA fighter attempting to become the first Native American lesbian in Congress, and Tom Niermann, a teacher running a more moderate campaign with a long list of local officials' endorsements. Described by campaign operatives as a "Whole Foods" district, the largely suburban region features a more affluent and educated voter base than the typical Trump stronghold.

Democrats need to pick up 23 seats in the House and two seats in the Senate to win majorities in those chambers and put the brakes on Trump's agenda.

With dozens of Republican lawmakers retiring this year, the minority party has a decent chance of taking over the House.
