Saudi Arabia's diplomatic dispute with Canada: An explainer

A spokesman said: "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia...will not accept interference in its internal affairs or imposed diktats from any country".

Saudi authorities accused Ottawa of interfering with its internal affairs.

Egypt saw crucial USA military aid frozen previous year over its own human rights record amid one of its toughest ever crackdowns on dissent, but that decision was reversed last month.

They froze trade with Canada and suspended the scholarships of about 5,000 Saudi students studying in the country.

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), a loose association of the six Gulf Arab countries, the Arab League and Palestine also supported Saudi policy.

Ensaf Haidar, Raif Badawi's wife, who lives in Quebec with her three children, said Monday she was surprised when she heard about the two new arrests.

Just two months ago, Saudi women were given the right to drive a auto, yet several of the country's most prominent women's rights activists - including some who fought for years to drive - were arrested earlier this year on national security grounds.

Saudi Arabia's main state wheat-buying agency has told grains exporters it will no longer buy Canadian wheat and barley in its global tenders, European traders said on Tuesday.

The kingdom also expelled the Canadian ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has apparently threatened a 9/11-style aircraft attack on Canada in an astonishing tweet.

"Branding Saudi Arabia as an attractive destination for investment and trade is one of the underlying assumptions of Saudi Vision 2030", said Thomas Juneau, an assistant professor and Middle East expert at the University of Ottawa. "Canada stands together with the Badawi family in this hard time, and we continue to strongly call for the release of both Raif and Samar Badawi".

According to The Globe and Mail, citing a Saudi government source, more than 15,000 Saudis are studying in Canada on government-funded courses or grants at universities, colleges, or other institutions.

Among those arrested was Samar Badawi, whose brother Raif Badawi was arrested in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

The Amnesty spokeswoman noted a ban on women drivers was lifted in June, but that a number of activists who campaigned for the right to drive were arrested and face up to 20 years in prison.

Saudi Arabia is selling Canadian assets in an escalating row after Ottawa criticised the arrest of a female activist, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing sources.

"Saudi Arabia has taken a very public stand emphasizing the decisiveness of their leadership in defending their sovereignty" Ms Diwan said.

In the first comments by Washington since the dispute erupted, a U.S. State Department official said the United States had asked Riyadh for details on the detention of activists.

The ministry said it ordered the owner of the account to shut it down while investigations are completed. These are just a few diplomatic sanctions Saudi Arabia has imposed on Canada in the wake of a tweet over jailed Saudi activists by Canadian officials.
