Takeaways from day eight of the Paul Manafort trial

Manafort, a longtime Republican political consultant, has pleaded not guilty to 18 counts of bank fraud, tax fraud and failing to disclose foreign bank accounts.

Multiple bank officials said accurate information is essential for them as they decide whether to approve a loan.

Gates said he and Manafort turned to a Cypriot lawyer, whom he referred to in court as "Dr K", who set up bank accounts and shell companies on Manafort's behalf and "handled everything".

During cross examination, Manafort's attorneys pointed out Gates' extramarital affairs, including a woman in London who may have had a hand in the financial crimes Gates to which admitted, Politico reported.

Kevin Downing, Manafort's lead defense attorney, sought to undermine Gates' credibility in the eyes of the jury on Tuesday, pressing him about embezzling money from Manafort and an extramarital affair. She reached out to Manafort and Gates repeatedly for clarity, and they assured the bank several times that their documents were correct. Gates came on board the Trump campaign with Manafort and stayed for the duration of the campaign, later serving as deputy chairman for Trump's inaugural committee and then starting a pro-Trump PAC.

In testimony Tuesday, Gates laid responsibility squarely at Manafort's feet for a series of crimes, saying the two had committed crimes together by stashing money in foreign bank accounts and falsifying bank loan documents.

Napolitano said T.S. Ellis III has shown an "extraordinary bias" against the government, which means he believes the judge has a bias against special counsel Robert Mueller and his team of prosecutors.

But Gates did not answer Downing's question after the prosecution objected to the relevance of the inquiry.

At first, Gates merely noted that in March 2016 Manafort hired him to work for "one of the presidential candidates".

She said in another instance, Manafort maintained that there were no mortgages on a separate NY property when there actually were.

"Let me be clear, I don't care what the transcript said ... don't do it again", Ellis said, admonishing the prosecutor Uzo Asonye.

Overall, the accountant traced more than $65 million flowing into offshore accounts controlled by Manafort, and she detailed for jurors how more than $15.5 million flowed out to fund his lavish lifestyle between 2010 and 2014.

Ellis questioned whether prosecutor Greg Andres could shorten his case and skip some of the evidence.

The prosecution has said it expected to wrap up its case by week's end.

He also said he committed credit card and mortgage fraud, falsified a letter for a colleague involved in an investment deal and made false statements in a deposition at Mr Manafort's direction.

Gates, who embezzled hundreds of thousands - possibly millions - of dollars from his boss over a decade, went behind his back to cook numbers and hide his income for him, they have argued. They made a mistake when they confirmed me.

But while the trial has only vaguely touched on the Trump campaign directly, and the core allegations of the indictment don't have much of anything to do with Trump, the trial has raised a key unanswered question about why Manafort agreed to join the Trump campaign for free. "In reality, it was basically money moving between accounts", Gates said. He poked fun at himself Wednesday as he haggled with the attorneys for 20 minutes over the number and type of charts prosecutors could present during the testimony of the Federal Bureau of Investigation forensic accountant.

"No you weren't", Judge Ellis said.

Gates, 46, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with the government as it prosecutes Manafort for allegedly evading U.S. taxes on tens of millions of dollars earned from political consulting work they did together in Ukraine from 2006 to 2014. "I am trying to change".
