Aftershock rocks Indonesia island as efforts continue to provide quake relief

A strong aftershock struck Indonesia's Lombok today, causing panic among evacuees already traumatised by a devastating natural disaster that killed more than 160 on the holiday island four days earlier.

Reuters has reported collapsed buildings and widespread damage, likely compounding fresh damage from quakes which have already devastated the island this month.

The head of a Red Cross assessment team on the Indonesian island of Lombok has described Sunday's magnitude 7 quake as "exceptionally destructive", warning that it may still take days for the full impact to emerge.

The magnitude-6.2 natural disaster followed Sunday's magnitude-6.9 tremor, which came a week after a magnitude-6.4 quake killed at least 17.

The latest quake was felt strongly on the island and followed a 6.9 quake on Sunday that killed at least 164 people and damaged thousands of houses.

Lombok was hit by three big quakes in little more than a week.

The new tremor hit off the north-west coast of Lombok, sending people running into the streets in panic.

Those without homes now have been accommodated in shelters and tents and authorities have also built makeshift tents with medical facilities to treat the injured.

Workers with heavy machinery are searching the rubble of homes, schools and mosques, with hope of finding any survivors fading.

Aid had begun trickling into some of the most isolated regions by midday Thursday, officials said, but many displaced people still lack basic supplies.

The updated figure was announced shortly after a strong aftershock shook the island, where tens of thousands of people have been left homeless.

Almost three-quarters of residential structures in North Lombok had been destroyed, Sutopo Nugroho, the agency's spokesperson, said.

Officials said the quake's epicentre was on land and so there was no risk of a tsunami.

The Indonesian Red Cross said it had set up 10 mobile clinics in the north of the island. "Most of them do not want to stay indoors during treatment or after an operation".

"We need diapers, we lack everything, I'm afraid my baby would get sick", she added.

He said they had later found and treated 40 people with broken bones, cuts and bruises.
