Strongest typhoon in quarter century batters Japan

Bullet train services have been reduced, while local schools and Universal Studios Japan, a theme park near Osaka, were closed for the day.

The typhoon also affected factory operations, including Suntory Holdings Ltd.'s Yamazaki Distillery in Shimamoto, Osaka Prefecture.

The agency on Tuesday has warned of torrential rain and powerful gusts of wind across both eastern and western Japan and has urged the public to be vigilant for high waves, potential floods and landslides.

The ceiling at Kyoto station in Kyoto city collapsed, injuring some people, local police authorities said.

Heavy rain and strong winds are seen near Tokushima Prefectural Government building in Tokushima. Four people were hurt as a roof fell on them on a street in Hachioji, western Tokyo.

The return services from Osaka - SQ623 and SQ619 - have also been axed. Another truck was almost blown off a bridge connecting Shikoku island and the main island of Honshu.

And thousands of people have been stranded at Kansai International Airport, located on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, after flooding and damage to the bridge leading to the airport. The tanker was empty and none of its crew was injured, the coast guard said.

One of Japan's busiest airports, Osaka's Kansai International Airport, was completely shut on Tuesday (Sep 4) because of flooding caused by Typhoon Jebi, the strongest to hit Japan in 25 years.

Shinzo Abe, the prime minister, urged people not to wait for mandatory evacuation orders to abandon their homes as Typhoon Jebi, known as Typhoon 21 in Japan, struck the island of Shikoku and the centre and west of the main island of Honshu.

As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jebi was traveling at a speed of 75 kph over the sea off Sado Island, and packing winds of up to 180 kph with an atmospheric pressure of 970 hectopascals at its center.

Jebi's course brought it close to parts of western Japan hit by rains and flooding that killed more than 200 people in July but most of the damage this time appeared to be from the wind.

"I urge the Japanese people to take action to protect your lives, including preparing and evacuating early", Mr Abe said, as the severe weather forced him to cancel a planned visit to the southwest of...

Almost 600 flights were cancelled, along with scores of ferries and trains, NHK public television said. (JR East) decided on the morning of September 4 to reduce Nozomi and Hikari bullet train services on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line to around two trains each per hour. Toyota Motor Corp said it was cancelling the night shift at 14 plants.
