Syria war: Russian Federation 'resumes Idlib air strikes'

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was in Damascus on September 3 for talks with President Bashar al-Assad and other Syrian officials ahead of an expected military offensive by Syrian government forces in Idlib Province, the last opposition stronghold in Syria.

The SOHR said the air strikes were in the countryside near Jisr Al Shughour on the western edge of the rebels' northwestern territory.

Syrian forces are massing around the northwestern province of Idlib, in preparation for the assault.

Russian Federation accuses rebels in Idlib of attacking Hmeimim with weaponised drones and insists jihadist groups in the province must be eliminated.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Russia's position, calling Idlib a "hornets" nest of terrorists'.

The top US military officer warned on Tuesday that a major Syrian military assault on the rebel-held enclave of Idlib would lead to a "humanitarian catastrophe" and instead recommended more narrowly tailored operations against militants there.

That follows statements Monday by Iran's Foreign Ministry saying Idlib should be cleared of "terrorists".

Russian air raids ceased in and around Idlib on August 15, but pro-regime forces have maintained an aerial bombardment and shelling there, the war monitor said. "The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy", Trump tweeted. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported 9 people killed.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday warned against Assad regime's possible attacks in Idlib urging Iran and Russian Federation not to make "a grave humanitarian mistake" by taking part in the attacks. "Don't let that happen!"

"Just to speak out with some warnings, without taking into account the very unsafe, negative potential for the whole situation in Syria, is probably not a full, comprehensive approach", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a press conference in the capital Moscow.

The visit comes days before the leaders of Iran, Turkey, and Russian Federation are expected to meet in Iran to discuss the situation in Idlib.

The International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based think tank, said an all-out assault on Idlib and its catastrophic consequences could still be avoided.

"Just to speak out with some warnings, without taking into account the very unsafe, negative potential for the whole situation in Syria, is probably not a full, comprehensive approach", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, apparently in reference to Trump's comment.

"Russia seeks to ensure not just the regime's military victory in Syria but its full political restoration through global re-legitimation at war's end".
