Pressley beat Michael Capuano, a 10-term incumbent, in Massachusetts' 7th District.

With no Republican on the ballot in November's midterm election, Pressley is now nearly certain to become the state's first black congresswoman.

Boston City Council member Ayana Pressley (D) has knocked off 10-term Rep. Michael Capuano (D-MA), the latest progressive insurgent to topple an establishment favorite in a primary this election cycle.

For Pressley, as with many other ascendant candidates of color, unabashedly progressive credentials smoothed her path to victory in the primary. Shortly after her win, Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Pressley.

A piece in Boston.com profiling Pressley's race after Ocasio-Cortez's victory this summer noted the similarities between their two campaigns. Pressley acknowledged that she and Capuano would probably vote the same way on most issues, but she has argued that she could lead "a movement" from the seat. As FiveThirtyEight reports, a MA candidate has followed in the footsteps of the young Ocasio-Cortez with a surprising upset against a mainstream Democrat challenger on Tuesday evening.

The 7th Congressional District is the only one in the state where minorities comprise a majority of the population.

He said the party is "getting serious about who its representatives are in terms of not just identity politics but have coalitions resemble the people who are the voters". There are no Republicans on the November ballot.

MA senator Elizabeth Warren, a favourite to run in the 2020 Presidential election, was uncontested for the state's Democratic nomination.

However, unlike Crowley, Capuano had fiercely contested the MA race by racking up endorsements, attending debates and highlighting his consistently liberal voting record in one of the most Democratic districts in a traditionally Democratic state.
