Ayana Pressley: African-American woman wins MA primary

Democratic Rep. Mike Capuano has conceded defeat to Boston city councilor Ayanna Pressley in the MA primary for his US House seat Tuesday, the latest upset to rock the Democratic Party and showcase a restive base eager for change. Tonight, she won hers.

In a speech after her win, Ms Pressley said: "Change is coming and the future belongs to all of us".

Her opponent was a long-serving... "Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman". "I'm just as upset as they are, but so be it", Capuano told supporters.

Diehl defeated John Kingston, a businessman who once tried to fund a third-party challenge to Trump, and Beth Lindstrom, who served in Republican Gov. Mitt Romney's administration.

With no Republican running for the Seventh District seat in the general election, Pressley is poised to become the first woman of color from MA to serve in the US House.

One of the closest watched races was longtime democratic incumbent Congressman Michael Capuano, who lost his seat to Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley.

Another veteran congressman, Democratic Rep. Richard Neal, faced a spirited primary challenge from Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, a black attorney from Springfield who, if elected, would be the first Muslim to serve in Congress from MA.

Pressley enjoyed an endorsement from Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter.

Capuano was the only Democratic incumbent in MA to lose a primary Tuesday night, with three others easily fending off challenges from the left. She's also been outspoken about being a rape survivor.

But when you put the Pressley upset together with the defeat of a couple of veteran members of the House leadership on Beacon Hill, the chant at Pressley headquarters Tuesday night may be prescient - "change can't wait". "Ours was truly a people powered, grassroots campaign. that dared to do what Massachusetts Democrats aren't supposed to do".

In nearby Connecticut, Jahana Hayes is on track to become that state's first black woman to win a congressional seat if she prevails in November.

Ocasio-Cortez said the new crop of left-leaning Democrats would stick closely to their priorities, which mirror those of the minority communities they represent. Pressley, though, was already a well-known figure in MA politics, and the race was seen as close and competitive for months.

Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has backed Pressley, who shares similar far-left views, including Medicare-for-all and defunding of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "People of every walk of life".
