Pompeo accuses Russian Federation of justifying Idlib offensive

During their trip, the U.S. diplomats will reassure Israel of America's support and "underscore that the United States will respond to any chemical weapons attack perpetrated by the Syrian regime".

Muallem said there was clear evidence that the U.S. was continuing to support terrorist groups like Daesh and Nusra Front, adding that the United States would certainly use a chemical weapons incident as a pretext to attack Syria.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said Thursday that Israel will continue to act in Syria as it deems necessary for its national defense, without consideration for the worldwide agreements that would formally end the brutal eight-year civil war in the country.

It was not immediately clear whether Turkey's decision to update its list of terror groups to include HTS could indicate a green light from Ankara for a possible Russian-backed regime operation into Idlib. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said that terrorists of the Tahrir al-Sham group (affiliated with the Jabhat Nusra) were preparing a provocation in Idlib province in order to accuse Syrian government forces of using chemical weapons against civilians.

Turkey, which has long supported anti-Assad rebels, has cooperated with Russian Federation and Iran on talks over Syria in recent years and has troops in the Idlib region on an observation mission.

The US well aware that any possible military action against the legitimate government of Syria must be made by consensus of the global community. "The 3 million Syrians who have already been forced out of their homes and are now in Idlib will suffer from this aggression", he wrote in a Twitter post on Friday. Similarly, tens of thousands of anti-regime fighters have been relocated to Idlib after surrendering elsewhere to Assad-aligned troops.

It bracketed HTS as a variant name for Al-Nusra Front. He announced his readiness to go to Idlib to help provide safe passage out for civilians.

On a recent visit to Moscow, the country's foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, called for more time for a Turkish plan to negotiate with the rebels in Idlib, including radical Islamist groups.

The civil war in Syria seems to be nearing its end, yet officials have been voicing their concerns that an offensive toward Idlib would end in catastrophe and ignite new conflicts in the region.

The area, which has been controlled by rebels since 2015, has been targeted by government and Russian Federation air and artillery strikes for months, devastating infrastructure such as schools and hospitals. HTS is now the most powerful armed faction in Idlib. Although Americans and the West have never been able to prove their claims that Damascus has used weapons of mass destruction, the United Nations refused to hold them accountable. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the strikes were carried out in violation of the norms and principles of worldwide law.

She said violence could force as many as 800,000 people to flee in one of the Syrian war's largest displacements yet.

He said that even if Assad's forces retake Idlib, that won't solve the problems that unleashed the war seven years ago.
