Sweden prepares to crack down on migrants

But centre-left and centre-right parties face an uphill battle in trying to form a viable coalition government. Meanwhile, the far-right Sweden Democrats won 17.6 percent of the vote in its best ever result. Instead, it told a more subtle but increasingly familiar tale now seen across a variety of European parliamentary systems and perhaps further afield, too - that of increasing political fragmentation and the slow decline of dominant political parties.

At the same time, the Sweden Democrats party still prides itself on its consistently hard-line position on immigration-and it proved that it could very ably inject its ideas into the political mainstream. However, he told a party rally it was nevertheless the victor of the election.

It said turnout stood at 84.4 percent, up one percentage point from the 2014 elections. The SD remains the third-biggest party. Anti-migrant parties in Germany, Austria, Denmark, France, Hungary, Italy and the United Kingdom have all made gains in recent years.

How significant is the tiny difference in vote share between the two blocs? The Conservatives were the biggest losers, down 3.5% compared to 2014.

After an initial exit poll from SVT showed the Sweden Democrats with the second-largest amount of votes, the center-right Moderate party surpassed the nationalist group, with 19.8 percent of voter support. The result was largely in line with the conventional opinion polls but below the 20 percent or more figure that some surveys had predicted.

Mr. Kristersson called on Mr. Lofven to resign, but also rebuffed Mr. Akesson.

Sweden has become accustomed to coalition governments and no one was expecting an outright winning party in this election.

"This election marks the death of bloc politics". Until now, it was relatively easy to form ideologically coherent alliances to govern but the arithmetic is much harder this time.

Projections indicate that the Sweden Democrats, which has white supremacist roots, placed third in the parliamentary election today. This means that a minority can govern, as long as it doesn't have a majority against it in the Riksdag.

Even though both main blocs have pledged not to work with the Sweden Democrats, its increased support has fueled fears that the rise of the far-right across Europe has now reached Sweden, one of the world's most liberal countries. And in the meantime, all the parties refuse to talk to the Sweden Democrats.

Note: The Left (V) is treated as part of the broad Red-Green bloc, but it is not part of the incumbent Social Democrat/Green Party government.

His voters are well-placed to understand Europe-wide social problems.

"The election is between potential democracy and potential facism", he told AFP. Members of Sweden's more established parties worry that such rhetoric could get worse.

Many voters are also concerned about violence. An exit poll ranking the issues citizens placed at the top of their agenda saw classic welfare topics such as healthcare, education, gender equality, law and order and elderly care come out on top. So far, however, that seems unlikely as the Alliance has rejected any cooperation with the Sweden Democrats. It could also be read as a damning verdict on the current government, which appears to have failed to deliver the quality of public services Swedes expect.

Far-right parties have gained strength in several European countries, including Germany and Italy.

Negotiations and discussions will stretch out over the coming days as the political uncertainty looms large over the country.

Politicians in Sweden will now "need a lot of imagination" to form a government, daily Svenska Dagbladet wrote. So far, he has been rebuffed, but depending on the final vote count, there may be some give, especially since at the local level nearly all parties have already been working together with the Sweden Democrats for some time. Like IKEA, Swedish politics will probably remain defined by its two strongest features: modular and pragmatic.
