83-Foot Wave Recorded By Satellite Monitoring Hurricane Florence

Hurricane Florence, heading for the Carolinas, "will likely be the storm of a lifetime" for areas of the coast, according to the National Weather Service early Wednesday.

Forecasters said Florence was expected to blow ashore late Thursday or early Friday, then slow down and dump 0.3 to 0.6 meters of rain that could cause flooding well inland and wreak environmental havoc by washing over industrial waste sites and hog farms.

Florence's nighttime winds were down to 115 miles per hour (185 kph) from a high of 140 miles per hour (225 kph), and the Category 4 storm fell to a Category 3, with a further slow weakening expected as the storm nears the coast.

Duke Energy officials say Florence will knock out power to an estimated 1 million to 3 million customers in North and SC.

Usually when a storm approaches the coast, forecasters can tell with ever increasing accuracy where it will hit and who will get walloped.

NOAA also released another video shot from Kermit, giving a more prolonged look at the eye of the storm.

"The primary fuel for hurricanes is a warm sea surface, which is getting warmer with climate change", said Dr Kelly McCusker, a climate scientist at the independent economic research firm Rhodium Group.

"Hurricane Florence is the strongest storm to target the Carolinas and this part of our country in decades".

About 3,000 National Guard members have been activated to assist with hurricane recovery, and more are on standby, officials said.

Hurricane Florence has developed into a major storm over extremely warm water, Ginis said.

Speaking in the Oval Office alongside Trump, FEMA administrator Brock Long said Hurricane Florence may be a "very devastating storm". Slower storms mean more rainfall over a smaller area. Workers are being brought in from the Midwest and Florida to help in the storms aftermath, it said.

The storm, packing winds of 110 mph, is just 235 miles off Wilmington Beach South Carolina and 280 miles off Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Florence has weakened a bit over 24 hours, but it's also grown even larger - and it will likely dump torrential rain over North and SC through Monday.

Weather conditions around the region will deteriorate into the day Friday as Florence slowly comes inland over southeaster North Carolina or near the North Carolina-South Carolina border.

Florence could do more than $170bn (£130bn) of damage and affect almost 759,000 homes and businesses, says analytics firm CoreLogic. The Navy, Air Force and Army have been moving people, ships and aircrafts out of harm's way, though evacuations were not mandatory at bases such as Camp Lejeune.

"The biggest thing is you're always anxious about yourself and friends and family - and whether they'll have a place to come back to", he said. Unsure of what they might find when they return home, the couple went shopping for a recreational vehicle. The GFS model has 20 or so inches of rain falling over the next couple of days and you can see how that rain accumulates over time.
