Henry Cavill Posts Weird Video in Wake of Superman Exit Reports

With word coming today that Warner Bros. and Henry Cavill have parted ways and Cavill will no longer be playing Superman in the DC films, the studio's superhero slate has suffered another blow.

Cavill himself then chose to add further fuel to the flames, with a video on Instagram of him with a new Superman action figure, captioned "Today was exciting #Superman".

Now all manner of speculation is going on, including rumours that Warner Bros could replace Cavill with Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan. In a statement issued after the THR report, it said: "We have a great relationship and great respect for Henry Cavill that continues to remain unchanged". Given the DC timeline, Superman would be a baby at the time of that film.

Though "the cape is still in his closet", Cavill's role in the DCEU could still be non-existent for the foreseeable future, aligning with the original report from The Hollywood Reporter detailing contract negotiations breaking down over a Shazam! cameo. Sources said to The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Brothers are turning its attention to a Supergirl movie, rather than a Superman film. Following reports that he's leaving the DCEU and hanging up his Kryptonian garb for good, Cavill has responded on Instagram - and it's not exactly a confirmation or a denial. The actor also reprised the role on 2016's Batman v. Superman and 2017's Justice League. There are also no plans for a solo Superman film currently, but there is potential to revisit the character a few years from now.

Adopting a stoic expression that mimicked his character, the action star silently raised a toy figure of Man Of Steel in the air as classical music rose into a crescendo. There are rumors that Batman actor Ben Affleck is also departing from the studio and that he will not appear in Matt Reeves' upcoming The Batman.

Justice League ended its theatrical run with a worldwide box office total of $657.9 million, meaning it stands as the lowest grossing film of the DC Extended Universe. In addition to Shazam! and a Supergirl project, there's December's Aquaman and 2019's Wonder Woman: 1984.
