Hurricane Florence, Isaac, Helene Tropical Update

The National Hurricane Center indicated that Florence could soon be approaching Category 5 storm strength.

It could be the most devastating to hit the region in three decades.

The storm may bring landslides, up to 20 inches of rain and flash flooding for the Hawaiian islands.

"Life-threatening" hurricane and storm surges watches have been issued for huge swathes of the USA southeastern coast as Hurricane Florence barrels across the Atlantic Ocean.

Maps of the storm's trajectory showed it most likely to hit the North Carolina shore near the SC border, making it the most powerful storm to threaten the USA mainland this year and the first of its magnitude in 29 years to strike the Carolinas. The entire SC coast is now under a mandatory evacuation order beginning at noon tomorrow.

SHAPIRO: What is your message to the people who say, I've been through storms in the past; I can ride out this one?

"We do not want to risk one SC life in this hurricane", Governor Henry McMaster said at a news conference. More than 1 million people have been ordered to evacuate as the storm advances.

In North Carolina, the first mandatory evacuation order was issued at noon, and Gov. Roy Cooper expects more later Monday and Tuesday. The potential threats to the area posed by Florence include damaging winds, which can result in power outages and structural damage, flooding caused by heavy rain, and a significant storm surge impact.

Residents of coastal areas are boarding up homes and packing their bags as residents brace for Florence's wrath.

The Weather Channel has reported that a "destructive strike" on the East Coast of the United States is likely, noting that, if the storm remains a Category 4 hurricane, it will only be the fourth-ever storm of that magnitude to strike the East Coast of the country.

Hurricane Isaac and Helene can be seen to the east of Florence. "We live paycheck to paycheck, being a military family, and it's four days until payday".

An estimated 250,000 more people from the northern Outer Banks were due to be sent to higher ground starting at Tuesday midday.

Quagliariello emphasized the impact of the hurricane, including tropical storm-force winds, could extend more than 100 miles from the storm's center. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 miles per hour.

Some tourists and residents were still outside enjoying pleasant weather as forecasters said computer models narrowed the grim target with clearer consensus.

"Florence is expected to be an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday", the NHC said in its latest bulletin.

The only Category 5 hurricanes to hit the US were Andrew in 1992, Camille in 1969 and an unnamed "Labor Day" hurricane in 1935. Hugo was among the most intense, which made landfall in SC as a Category 4 with 140-mph winds.

"Well-built framed homes may incur major damage or removal of roof decking and gable ends". Many major roads and arteries have reversed traffic flow to help those evacuate quickly. "Electricity and water will be unavailable for several days to weeks after the storm passes".

The first effects were already being seen on barrier islands as unsafe rip currents hit beaches and seawater flowed over a state highway. We are bracing for a hard hit.

The state has issued mandatory evacuations.

A satellite image shows Hurricane Florence spinning in the Atlantic Ocean Monday morning, September 10, 2018.

At 11 p.m. EDT, the storm's center was located about 465 miles (750 kilometers) south-southeast of Bermuda and about 1,085 miles (1745 kilometers) east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina.

SAFFO: They are following the evacuation orders.

The ocean waters that Florence is travelling over are about 2.7 degrees (1.5 degrees Celsius) warmer than normal, McNoldy said.

Preparations for Florence come as the Atlantic hurricane season hits its peak.

To show the size and power of the storm, a number of photos taken Monday from the International Space Station and astronaut Ricky Arnold show Florence's girth as the storm churns across the Atlantic Ocean. Isaac's forward movement was accelerating on a path to cross into the lower Caribbean on Thursday. Some schools will be used as evacuation shelters, which will open as needed, officials said Monday.
