Hurricane Hunter Flight Says Isaac Has Weakened Further

Tropical Storm Isaac, which passed between the Caribbean island nations of Dominica and Martinique late Wednesday and early Thursday, is now moving nearly due west across the eastern Caribbean Sea.

The US National Hurricane Centre in its 8 a.m. tropical storm update reported Tropical Storm Isaac's centre was 25 miles east of Dominica and 80 miles southeast of Guadeloupe.

SURF: Swells generated by Isaac will begin to affect portions of the Lesser Antilles this afternoon.

The Miami-based center says the center of the eye moved ashore with top sustained winds of 90 miles per hour (150 kph), making Florence a Category 1 hurricane in terms of wind intensity.

Also spinning in the Atlantic are Tropical Storms Helene and Isaac and Subtropical Storm Joyce, while Tropical Depression Olivia and Super Typhoon Mangkhut are making waves in the Pacific.

The mammoth waves were spotted early Wednesday in the storm's northeast quadrant, said the NHC's Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch, which has been documenting Florence's waves all week.

Tropical storm force winds are in the 39-73 miles per hour range, says NOAA. "Catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding are likely", the Hurricane Center said.

"The combination of a risky storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline", according to the National Hurricane Center.

Florence is expected to make landfall late Thursday night or early Friday morning, Mountain Time, somewhere between Atlantic Beach, NC and Savannah, GA.

North Carolina alone is forecast to get 9.6 trillion gallons, enough to cover the Tar Heel state to a depth of about 10 inches (25 centimeters). Fountain says most storms are an inconvenience, "but Hurricane Florence will be a life-changing event for many people here in the Carolinas".

He said: "The UK's weather will come under the influence of ex-hurricane Helene although there are other systems in the Atlantic which may modify this particular one".
