WaPo: Saudi Prince Ordered Operation to Lure Khashoggi to Saudi Arabia

Khashoggi - a USA resident and one of the more outspoken critics of the regime of King Salman and his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, and Turkish officials suspect he was murdered.

'We're demanding everything, ' Trump said, asked if his team was seeking information from the Saudis - longtime allies who the Trump administration has hugged closely.

Trump says in a television interview that "we have investigators over there and we're working with Turkey and frankly we're working with Saudi Arabia". But Trump has often talked down to Saudi officials by asserting that the U.S.is "protecting" them, therefore they need to pay more money in exchange for this protection.

The US president told Fox and Friends he was committed to getting to the bottom of the disappearance, with the writer having not been seen since he walked into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last week.

Critics have accused the White House of being slow to react to Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance and hesitant to criticize the Saudi government, a close partner of the Trump administration.

"We have got to send a signal early on that going around killing journalists is totally inappropriate and if he (MBS) has been involved there's got to be sanctions".

Khashoggi's fiancee Hatice Cengiz wrote an op-ed imploring Trump and the first lady to help, and has written a letter to the White House has gotten the pair's attention.

"Well I have to find out who did it, but people saw him go in but they didn't see him come out, as I understand it".

Graham said that if the Saudi's are implicated the USA will need to take a "firm stand". "This is a bad situation. We can't let this happen".

Rubio is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which has called for an investigation into whether Saudi Arabia should face human rights sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act. He says that stepping back from arms sales to the Saudis "a very, very tough pill to swallow for our country". And Jared Kushner is known to be close with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

If confirmed, it would offer proof that the Saudi government was attempting to silence Mr Khashoggi. "We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as available". "I don't believe anything they say", Graham told Al Jazeera.

On his first worldwide trip as president, Trump visited Saudi Arabia and announced $110 billion in proposed arms sales. Ali Bakeer, an expert on Middle Eastern affairs, told Daily Sabah that if the Saudis are responsible for killing or kidnapping Khashoggi, and the available evidence until now points to them, then this "barbaric" act should be met with a strong response not only from Turkey but also from the worldwide community and the U.S.in particular.

The Post quoted a Turkish official as saying authorities suspect a 15-member team killed the journalist at the consulate.

Mohammed ordered that Khashoggi be lured from the United States, where he had been living for the past year after a crackdown on dissidents in the kingdom, to Saudi Arabia, where he could be detained, the Washington Post reported. This has led to "speculation by officials and analysts in multiple countries", according to the Post, that the original plan may have been to capture Khashoggi and take him back to Saudi Arabia, and that the journalist had been killed when that plan somehow went south.

Khashoggi had first left Saudi Arabia a year ago, saying he feared retribution for his criticism of Saudi policy in the Yemen war and its crackdown on dissent. He said withholding sales would hurt the USA economy. "I want to make an example of this government if they did this".

'I would certainly concerned, ' he said.

A group of US senators on Wednesday pressured Trump to hold Saudi Arabia, a longtime USA ally in the Middle East, accountable for Khashoggi's fate, possibly calling for sanctions against the kingdom if it finds human rights violations under terms of the Global Magnitsky Act of 2016.

The pro-government newspaper - "Sabah", owned by the Turkish finance minister - published the names of the 15 Saudis, accompanied by still images from CCTV.
