'Halloween' Breaks Box Office Records With Massive October Opening

Directed by David Gordon Green, the film stars Jamie Lee Curtis once again as Laurie Strode. Without another big horror movie getting a wide release before Halloween, I wouldn't be surprised if Halloween sticks at the top next weekend as well.

Halloween recounts the return of homicidal masked figure Michael Myers (Nick Castle) 40 years after he set off on a bloody Halloween night killing spree. The new Halloween will also mark the series' best debut (blowing past the Rob Zombie remake's $26.4 million) and the second-highest opening for an R-rated horror movie, behind last year's It ($123.4 million).

For all the twists and plot inventions that filmmakers have been throwing at us over the years-from sibling surprises and unwanted backstories to psychic connections and unusual cults-the Halloween movies remain popular for one simple reason. The movie reportedly sold about 8.8 million tickets, which is already a lot better than Box Office Pro's initial forecast back in August that the sequel would draw in just 6.8 million horror fans and other curious nostalgia seekers. And is the highest grossing horror movie with a female lead. Until this weekend, Curtis' biggest opening was for Beverly Hills Chihuahua at $29 million. On a $10 million budget, the film earned a total of $91.8 million, including global openings. "Halloween" cost just $10 million, marking another win for Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions, who co-financed the film with Miramax.

"Halloween", which is a direct follow-up to the original "Halloween" and skips over the sequels in between, has been well-received by critics, with an 80 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Meanwhile, people are still seeing A Star Is Born and Venom, which took the second and third spots on this weekend's box office chart respectively. That brings its North American tally to $28 million.

But, around here, one of the big things that jumped out for audiences of John Carpenter's original Halloween was the recurrence of Bowling Green/Warren County references throughout that film. Goosebumps 2 also held its place in the box office ranking fourth while First Man dropped two spots down to number five.
