Saudi Arabia to prosecute Jamal Khashoggi killers

The death of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and critic of de facto Saudi ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has sparked global outrage and mushroomed into a crisis for the world's top oil exporter and strategic ally of the West.

Turkey is requesting that Saudi Arabia hand over the suspects in the killing, which the kingdom has described as a rogue operation by officials who may have exceeded their orders or authority.

The comments came as pressure mounted on Saudi Arabia to reveal the whereabouts of Mr Khashoggi's remains and say who ordered the killing.

Speaking with Turkish television network Haberturk in her first interview since Khashoggi's death, Hatice Cengiz said she "died every day" since Khashoggi was killed by Saudi officials inside the country's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

Khashoggi was killed by Saudi agents inside the country's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, at the start of October.

Erdogan said he had spoken with Prince Mohammed. "We know that people exceeded their authority and we know that we're investigating them", he said.

U.S. CIA Director Gina Haspel heard an audio of the killing during a visit to Turkey this week, sources told Reuters, and she briefed President Donald Trump about Turkey's findings and her discussions after her return to Washington on Thursday.

In the latest development in the investigation of the murder case, Saudi's Attorney General Shaikh Suood bin Abdullah Al Mo'jab confirmed that journalist's killing was pre-meditated.

"I do not trust the U.S.", she told the Telegraph.

Turkish media have published a series of grisly revelations about the murder.

Saudi Arabia is not only the biggest importer of American arms but a critical partner in the Trump administration's Middle East agenda, which includes stabilising Syria, brokering a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, pushing back against Iranian influence, finishing off the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq and bringing an end to the war in Yemen.

After initially claiming that the journalist left the consulate, Saudi prosecutors said Thursday that Turkish evidence shows the slaying of journalist Jamal Khashoggi was premeditated.

Khashoggi's fiancée says she has declined an invitation to the White House from US President Donald Trump, accusing him of not being honest about investigating the killing.

Late Tuesday, the US said it would revoke the visas of 21 Saudi suspects in the Khashoggi case, and Britain followed suit on Wednesday.

In his speech, Erdogan mocked the initial story of Khashoggi's disappearance as "childish" and "far from state seriousness". Trump also said Riyadh had staged the "worst cover-up ever" over the killing.

On October 25, Prince Mohammed attended the first meeting of a committee aiming to restructure the kingdom's intelligence services after the killing of Khashoggi, the state-run Saudi Press Agency said.
