Copil stuns Zverev to reach Swiss final

Like never before in Basel, Roger got broken 11 times in the opening four matches against Filip Krajinovic, Jan-Lennard Struff, Gilles Simon and Daniil Medvedev and he allowed Copil to steal his serve twice as well, having the advantage in both sets but crumbling under the pressure to waste the opportunity for a much better result and a possible first ATP crown.

In the third, Copil kept pace, with Zverev faltering on serve in the 10th game and his opponent taking advantage with a cross-court volley victor to advance amid cheers for the underdog.

After two patchy - but winning - performances this week over three sets, Federer finally showed the game befitting a 20-time Grand Slam champion.

Federer next plays Jan-Lennard Struff on Thursday. "I was a bit unsure of my serve and his return is excellent", said Federer.

Federer has not been beaten at his home tournament since losing the 2013 final to Juan Martin del Potro and emerged with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 victory over Marius Copil.

"This was nearly a turnaround week for me", the Swiss legend said.

"I was trying to win one or two matches here just to stay there".

"It would be great to win my 99th career title here in Basel".

His qualification means there are two places still up for grabs ahead of the Paris Masters, with Croatian Marin Cilic, Austrian Dominic Thiem, Nishikori and American John Isner still in the race. The inspired Romanian's booming serves and lobs created tension St Jakobshalle but the local favourite won five straight games to complete another memorable win.

Federer started his slow recovery with a break for 4-5; he then saved set points to level at 6-all, winning a game in which he double-faulted twice in a row and saved a set point with an ace.

But the veteran clawed his way back to 4-4 and broke again to lead 5-4.

"It's very hard for me to explain how it feels like", he said.

This was Federer's 18th consecutive winning match at a tournament where he is unbeaten since 2013 and is an eight time victor.
