PM Unveils Sardar Patel's 2900-Crore Statue Of Unity

The launch of the giant statue, which stands almost twice the height of New York's 305-ft tall Statue of Liberty, is widely seen as the unofficial launch of Mr Modi's re-election campaign.

Based on award-winning sculptor Ram Sutar's creation, the statue was built by engineering firm Larsen and Toubro.

"In Modi's worldview this statue is a crucial part of the signaling of the rise of India and the presenting before the world that rise in visual terms", Hindol Sengupta, who wrote a biography about Patel, told the Washington Post.

The construction work has taken almost four years to complete the mega project.

Indian officials are anxious that community groups could stage protests to demand compensation for land taken to erect the Statue of Unity. Surpassing the workforce scale of most high-end structures around the world, at the peak of construction, 2,500 workers including several hundred Chinese labourers were working around the clock to install the 5,000 squares of bronze cladding on the façade of the statue. They were detained before Modi visited the tribal area to inaugurate the multi-crore Sardar Sarovar Project ahead of the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections. He further said, "Located by the banks of river Narmada, the height of this idol is twice that of America's renowned Statue of Liberty".

But officials in Gujarat state are anxious that community groups could stage protests to demand compensation for land taken to erect the Statue of Unity, which cost 29.9bn rupees (£315m) and has taken almost four years to build.

Modi said Patel was a beacon of hope for India in the time of crisis and he will be a source of inspiration for ages to come.

Some of the other major attractions include the inauguration of a 17-km-long Valley of Flowers, a tent city for tourists near the statue and a museum dedicated to the life and times of Patel. Police guards kept watch on posters put in place of the torn ones.

The Guardian reports officials in Gujarat state are anxious that community groups could stage protests during the opening ceremony on October 31 to demand compensation for land taken to erect the Statue of Unity.

"Tribals have been exploited by different governments, the ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) is repeating it again", Mr Vasava said, vowing to continue protests. I used soap to make it.

More than 80 per cent of the local population are from tribal groups with special protected status.

Around 185 families who had to move to make way for the statue have been compensated and given 1,200 acres (475 hectares) of new land, according to the Gujarat government.
