Trump Hints China Trade Moves for Argentina G20 After Xi Call

Donald Trump said trade talks were "moving along nicely" and that meetings were "being scheduled" at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires.

Trump on Thursday said he had "very good" talks with Xi on the growing trade conflict between the two economic giants.

Jacob Parker, vice president of China operations at the US-China Business Council in Beijing, said there were plenty of challenges that would require significant negotiations in advance of a meeting between Trump and Xi to ensure success.

Beijing and Washington have been involved in a trade spat since April 2018, when the U.S. started imposing steep tariffs on goods from China.

The moves also follow media reports that pointed to progress on the US-China trade dispute.

However, a senior Trump administration official on dismissed the report as untrue, a CNBC reporter said in a post on Twitter.

But within hours of the upbeat assessments, the US Justice Department took aim at another Chinese firm it accused of unfair practices, part of an across-the-board pressure campaign by the Trump administration targeting Beijing.

Xi was quoted by CCTV as saying after the call with Trump that the two leaders had hoped to expand trade cooperation.

In comments to state media, Mr Xi expressed his hopes for a trade deal and said he was willing to meet with Mr Trump in Argentina.

Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander told the official the USA and China are competitors not adversaries and suggested they can prosper together.

In recent months, China has repeatedly questioned the US's sincerity in trade talks, wary of agreeing to something only to have Mr Trump change his mind.

"The economic teams of the two countries should strengthen contact, conduct consultations on issues of mutual concern, and push for a mutually acceptable solution to China-US economic and trade issues", Xi said.

Trump said that in early October China wanted to come in and make a deal, but he told them they weren't ready.

China and the United States are locked in an increasingly bitter trade war, and both countries have already placed tariffs on some of each others' imports.

US Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee told Li that the delegation was there "to show our respect to a great country and a great people", and that the two countries "are competitors but not adversaries".

Beijing responded by introducing reciprocal tariffs on US-made goods.
