Trump's New Ad Blames Democrats, Migrant Caravan for Violent Crime

It includes scenes of a migrant caravan moving toward the USA, warning ominously, "Who else would Democrats let in?" and suggesting that more violence would soon penetrate the border.

The ad cuts between clips of Bracamontes and scenes of migrants from a caravan of up to 3,000 Central Americans headed through southern Mexico en route to the USA border.

"They're dead. I don't regret that", the sneering Bracamontes says in the courtroom as "Democrats let him stay" flashes on the screen.

Bush also was commander in chief when Bracamontes slipped back into the U.S. a short time later and when he got married on February 28, 2002, the paper reported. His image - complete with shaved head, long chin hair and accented English - is now the centerpiece of a video tweeted out by President Trump as part of his closing argument on immigration less than a week before midterm elections that could alter the path of his presidency.

Republican Carlos Curbelo, seeking re-election in a Democratic-leaning South Florida district, said he had not seen the video but criticised Mr Trump's use of it.

The 53-second video released Wednesday evening remains pinned to the top of the president's popular Twitter feed.

The video is reminiscent of the infamous 1988 "Willie Horton" ad used against Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis and condemned as racist.

Bracamontes was also featured in a January ad from the Trump campaign that received less attention.

"This was a classic example of racial cuing", Claire Jean Kim, a political-science professor at the University of California at Irvine, said in a 2012 PBS special. As Massachusetts governor, Dukakis supported the furlough program. Thirty years later, critics say Trump is hoping the same sort of propaganda will work for him, although his approach is clearly not much better.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez characterised the ad as "distracting, divisive Donald at his worst".

It wasn't just liberals who took issue with this latest "fake news" attack by the President.

CNN political analyst John Avlon reminded her that former RNC chair and George H.W. Bush adviser Lee Atwater had apologized for the race-baiting Willie Horton ad shortly before his death in '91.

"It's a naked appeal to fear and hate, and it is racist", Lemon said during CNN Tonight.

"The Willie Horton ad gave George Herbert Walker Bush his one big black eye in history", said Brinkley.
