US Midterm Elections TODAY; What’s at Stake?

Democrats rode a wave of dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump to win control of the US House of Representatives on Tuesday, giving them the opportunity to block Trump's agenda and open his administration to intense scrutiny.

Voter turnout could be the highest for a midterm election in 50 years, experts predicted.

Democrat Amy McGrath, a former Marine Corps fighter pilot, is running neck-and-neck against Republican Andy Barr in a House race in Kentucky, a state Trump won by 30 points.

But Republicans appeared bound to hold onto the Senate, and possibly even pick up a couple of seats.

But in some other toss-up races, the GOP managed to hold on. Barbara Comstock - among the most endangered GOP incumbents, branded Barbara "Trumpstock" by Democrats - lost to Jennifer Wexton, a prosecutor and state legislator.

Outside Richmond, Virginia, one-time tea party favorite Rep. Dave Brat faced an unusually strong challenge from Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative motivated to run for office after the GOP vote to gut the Affordable Care Act.

The tumultuous first 21 months of the Trump presidency has fired up progressives across the country, and prompted a swell of left-wing activism on policies like healthcare, gun control, and immigration - and a bitter crusade against broader societal issues ranging from sexual misconduct to rising white nationalism. The new congressional term begins in January 2019. And Democrats were even less optimistic about the Senate.

Long lines and malfunctioning machines marred the first hours of voting in some precincts, including in Georgia, where some voters reported waiting up to three hours to vote in a hotly contested gubernatorial election.

The Senate consists of 100 members, two from each state.

Trump is trying to defy historic omens that suggest that commanders in chief often get a rebuke from voters in the midterm election of their first term. Also, more said they showed up at the polls to express opposition than did those who said they were casting a ballot to support him.

Trump is expected to observe Tuesday night's results at a watch party in the White House's residence with family and friends, according to Sanders' statement. "The president has energized a staggering number of Americans at packed arenas and in overflow crowds at rallies across the country".

A fight over funding for the President's signature campaign trail promise of a wall along the US-Mexico border looms large when lawmakers return to Washington after the midterms and along with it, the threat of a partial government shutdown. That could help Democrats because younger voters tend to lean their way.

Today's elections are the first opportunity for Americans to have a say about Donald Trump's presidency. He was active on Twitter throughout much of the day, blasting out endorsements for Republican candidates and weighing in on the balloting. "The Democrats still essentially have no path to the majority without winning one of these three states: North Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas, and the Republicans retain what appear to be edges in all three".

Analysts expect pressure on stocks if Democrats gain control of the House and a sharper downward reaction if they take the Senate too. The first time was during the Great Depression in 1934, when Democrats gained nine House and 10 Senate seats under President Roosevelt. A slow-moving caravan of thousands of Central American migrants trekking to the United States has served as ready fodder for Trump's diatribes for border security and immigration reform, and a roaring economy has helped the GOP foster confidence in their leadership.

After their victory, House Democrats are expected to try to harden USA policy toward Saudi Arabia, Russia and North Korea, while maintaining the status quo on hot-button areas like China and Iran. "Do not let their scare tactics frighten you away from the polls".

In contrast, Democrats have largely maintained a almost unwavering focus on health care in their closing message to voters.

Overall, 6 in 10 voters said the country was headed in the wrong direction, but roughly that same number described the national economy as excellent or good. The survey is separate from the traditional exit polls for the television networks.

Trump has defiantly rejected the idea that his own rhetoric contributed to the incidents and lamented the week before Election Day that the attacks slowed Republican momentum.

Addressing his supporters, he said, "The key is you have to go out to vote because in a sense I am on the ticket".

More than 60 percent of eligible voters took part in the 2016 vote, when the presidential race was on the ballot.

"Let me say this".

"We'll just have to work a little bit differently", he told reporters. Democrats won half of the seats they needed to claim House control with dozens additional competitive contests remaining. Republicans may just defy the odds and make midterm history. Other seats in the state were also considered in play.
