Andrew Gillum waffles on concession in Florida governor's race

According to the Miami Herald, if the margin of victory in a Florida race is 0.5 percent or less, a electronic recount of ballots must be carried out (unless the loser refuses). DeSantis holds a lead of 38,613 votes out of more than 8.2 million ballots counted - a margin of 0.47 percentage points.

Governor Rick Scott, who on Tuesday night declared victory over Nelson, was suddenly a mere 15,000 votes ahead and heading for a hand recount.

Although Gillum conceded the race to DeSantis, Gillum's campaign said Thursday it was "open" to the idea of asking elections officials to conduct a recount due to late ballots coming in.

A recount is also expected to take place in the Florida governor race between Republican Ron DeSantis and Democrat Andrew Gillum.

In a statement Thursday, Gillum's campaign says it underestimated the ballots that still needed to be counted when he conceded.

The campaign for Andrew Gillum announced Thursday it was bringing on Barry Richard, a lawyer who worked on the Florida recount in 2000, to handle operations for a possible statewide recount.

Once counties report their unofficial totals to the state on Saturday, Secretary of State Ken Detzner, an appointee of Scott, will be able to order any of the legally mandated recounts.

Scherer said it appears both sides would have lawyers in all 67 counties in anticipation of recounts that may begin as soon as Sunday and continue on Monday, Veterans' Day - a state holiday. He also told reporters on a conference call Thursday morning that there was significant undervoting in Broward County for the Senate race, where he said many voters didn't cast a vote for that race. The Sun-Sentinel reported that Broward Democratic Party chairwoman Cynthia Busch stated the Florida Democratic Party obtained on Wednesday the names of those who cast provisional ballots. Unfortunately, Florida residents hadn't actually voted yet, leading viewers to speculate about what exactly was going on at the network. If the gap falls to less than a quarter of a percentage point, a hand recount is required. "It makes you wonder what's going on", Scherer said.

State officials said they can't extend the deadlines.

They are taking provisional ballots and counting them "even though they're not able to vote", Schlapp said.

His claim to have won the election was backed by President Trump who tweeted: "Law enforcement is looking into another big corruption scandal having to do with electoral fraud in Broward and Palm Beach". Bill Nelson will likely not change the results but that Scott should still speak out on the matter so the Democrats can not control the narrative.

"All of a sudden they are finding votes out of nowhere", Trump said of the Senate race.

"It was a little dicey at times but I'm really happy about where we are", said state Rep. Byron Donalds.

Meanwhile, Republican Matt Caldwell's lead over Democrat Nikki Fried dwindled to 4,109 votes in the Florida Agriculture Commissioner race.

According to the Broward County Supervisor of Elections website, 695,799 ballots were cast.

Richard represented former President George W. Bush in the 2000 Florida recount.

Broward Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes said she didn't know how many ballots remain to be counted, but all were being processed. "But I firmly believe that at the end of this process, Nelson will prevail".

With Broward still counting early and mail ballots and Palm Beach County still counting mail ballots, Gov. Rick Scott holds a lead of.18 percent over Sen.

The competitive race - widely viewed as a proxy war between the progressive left and the far-right - attracted intense national scrutiny, with Democrats hopeful for a win amid a surge in voter turnout.
