General Motors To Close Ohio Plant, Thousands Affected

General Motors To Close Ohio Plant, Thousands Affected

Around 6,700 line workers in the United States and Canada will be "at risk" of losing their jobs, but the United Auto Workers (UAW) union suggested Monday that layoffs and furloughs would be discussed in upcoming contract meetings.

All of the products now being assembled at those three plants are expected to stop being produced by the end of 2019.

According to reports, the five North American plants concerned employ almost 7,000, including 3,000 workers in the Ontario company.

The decision comes as the largest USA automaker is poised to idle an assembly plant in Canada.

The biggest US autoworker union vowed to fight GM's plans.

President Trump told reporters, "We don't like it, I believe they'll be opening up something else". The automaker says the decision to reduce American production has to do with reduced demand for cars like the Chevrolet Cruze, which is built at the OH plant, and an overall strategic shift towards more popular crossover and SUV models.

"The actions we are taking today continue our transformation to be highly agile, resilient and profitable, while giving us the flexibility to invest in the future", GM's chief executive officer Mary Barra said in a statement.

General Motors Co.'s (GM's) plan to cancel production at US factories and cut thousands of jobs drew a swift rebuke in the industrial heartland where US President Donald Trump posted surprising electoral wins premised on his pledge to restore manufacturing.

GM offered buyouts to about 18,000 white-collar workers in the US and Canada October 2018.

In an investor call, Barra said some GM cars would no longer be available in North America, including the Chevrolet Cruze.

Trudeau says he is deeply disappointed General Motors is closing its Oshawa assembly plant and will do everything possible to help workers who will lose their jobs.

Too many of GM's factories are operating on a single shift to build models that have fallen out of favor, leading its plants to run about 1 million vehicles short of their full capacity, said Kristin Dziczek, vice president of industry, labor and economics for the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Reports about GM's plan to close the Oshawa plant in Ontario have proven to be true.

GM did not immediately comment on Trump's remarks, but the company noted it has other facilities in OH including a transmission plant in Toledo and metal center in Parma.

"We fought together to keep GM afloat and the American taxpayers bailed them out when they were on the verge of bankruptcy", Ryan said in a statement. LaCrosse and Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid production will end March 1, while CT6 and Impala production would stop June 1.

Canadian Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains said that GM "only made this official announcement to us yesterday".

Two other plants outside North America - as yet unnamed - are also due to close, in addition to the pre-announced shuttering of the firm's plant in the South Korean city of Gunsan.

GM plans to halt production next year at three assembly plants: the Lordstown small-car factory near Youngstown, Ohio; the Detroit-Hamtramck complex in Detroit; and the Oshawa, Ontario, assembly complex near Toronto.

Lordstown, which has dropped from three shifts to one in recent years, exclusively produces the Chevrolet Cruze. "They better put something else in", Trump, who has pushed for more manufacturing jobs throughout his nearly two years in office, said.
