Manafort met with Julian Assange ahead of 2016 leaks

"There is some speculation that maybe they are preparing to turn Julian Assange over to USA authorities", he said.

Ecuadorian intelligence claims WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange met with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort in London.

"Do you think this report makes it more likely that Paul Manafort or his allies on the Trump campaign could be on the other side of that original Mueller indictment of the Russians, as co-conspirators?" Then, per the report, months after a meeting with Manafort, WikiLeaks released emails hacked from the Democratic National Committee by Russian intelligence officers.

So far the parties involved have either strongly denied the report or, like press secretary Sarah Sanders, demurred from commenting upon it one way or another.

If confirmed, the report Tuesday suggests a direct connection between the Trump campaign and WikiLeaks, which released tens of thousands of emails stolen by Russian spies during the 2016 election.

Prosecutors did not confirm or deny any such charge sheet against Mr Assange. "Sources in Ecuador, however, say Manafort was not logged", The Guardian reports.

The Guardian cited two unidentified sources as saying Manafort first met Assange at the embassy in 2013, a year after Assange took refuge there to avoid being extradited to Sweden over sex crime allegations.

"Until a person is arrested, the government in my view has a compelling argument to keep the matter under seal", U.S. District Court Judge Leonie Brinkema said at the end of the brief hearing in an Alexandria, Virginia federal court.

Earlier this month United States prosecutors inadvertently disclosed the existence of a sealed indictment against Assange, in an unrelated case. Conspiracy theorist and Stone pal Jerome Corsi said Monday he is rejecting a plea deal from the special counsel's office and expects to be indicted. Townsend requested a few days to respond.

Still, many people disagreed with claims that Mueller would be able to prove Trump's alleged misdeeds, noting that the 1.5 year long investigation had failed to find any proof of his alleged ties to Moscow.

Sanders was asked on Tuesday whether Trump might lean on acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker who is supervising the Mueller probe; she said the answer should be obvious.

"London is the most watched city in the western world and if Manafort was there, there is nearly certainly CCTV camera footage of that happening and of course Paul Manafort's travel records of him coming in and out of London as well", he said.

Assange runs the WikiLeaks group, which the US intelligence community has concluded acted as an arm of Russian intelligence agencies working to help elect Trump in 2016 at the direction of that country's authoritarian leader, Vladimir Putin.
