No-deal Brexit could have 'devastating impact'

Before the meeting, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said the UK's departure was a "tragedy" for the EU and Ireland's Indian-origin Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the deal allowed for an "orderly withdrawal", in reference to the thorny issue of keeping an open post-Brexit border with the UK's Northern Ireland.

"Because right now if you look at the deal, they may not be able to trade with us", he said. And that wouldn't be a good thing. "Because right now if you look at the deal, they may not be able to trade with us ..."

Media reports say around 90 of the Conservative backbench MPs have so far said they will vote against her deal, essentially making it an impossible mission unless they change their minds.

Trump suggested May had made a mistake by signing an agreement that might impede a future trade deal between London and Washington.

The groundwork for an "ambitious" agreement with the USA has been laid in five meetings of joint working groups, the spokesman said.

At Sunday's summit, the European Union leaders would expect to endorse the treaty and approve the declaration by consensus, which means Spain in effect has the power to hold up the process.

May faced further censure on Brexit from the United States, where President Donald Trump said the European Union got a good deal that may make trade between Washington and London more hard.

May is visiting Wales and Northern Ireland to look for support for her deal from businesses in a bid to secure a parliament vote due on December 11.

Theresa May's Brexit deal has been attacked as the "worst of all worlds" by one of her staunchest allies, who also said a trade deal warning by US President Donald Trump should not be ignored.

As a result, there are also calls for a second "people's vote" so that the public can now make a more informed decision on what Brexit would really mean.

The TV clash is set to take place on the same night as the I'm a Celebrity final - just days before MPs vote on whether to accept or reject the European Union agreement.

More than one in 10 firms had moved jobs overseas and a similar proportion had cut British staff as part of preparations for Brexit, the SMMT added.

"Because no-one knows what would happen if this deal doesn't pass".

The Prime Minister, asked about the use of the Irish border backstop, said: "What arrangements we put in place in the United Kingdom for determining whether there should be any regulatory divergence is actually a matter for us".

"It must mark the point when we put aside the labels of "Leave" and "Remain" for good, and we come together again as one people".

The EU general court said that the opening of the Brexit negotiations had no direct impact on their situation.

On Tuesday morning, shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer wrote to the Government urging it to comply with the the House of Commons motion to publish the full legal advice on the Withdrawal Agreement in the next few days.

They have also agreed a statement on the future relationship, which will be used to guide the creation of a legally binding treaty.

A spokesman for Downing Street refused to confirm whether Number 10 was considering such a debate.

May needs to win a simple majority in parliament - 320 votes if all active lawmakers turn out and vote - but former whips, who have long studied parliamentary arithmetic, say the prime minister may end up needing only 305 votes if illnesses and abstentions are accounted for.
