Reports flaring about Mack Brown heading back to UNC

The 67-year-old, who won the national championship in 2005 with Vince Young as his quarterback, is now working as an analyst at ESPN.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that Mack Brown is now the front-runner in a return stint as head football coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The 2005 team, led by Vince Young, claimed victory over USC; a few years later, the 2009 team fell to Alabama.

The Tar Heels are in the midst of a deep two-year downturn.

This hiring has drawn some criticism from some, but it should be fun to see what Brown can do with the Tar Heels in the coming years. At the end of the 2013 season, he announced his (forced) resignation from Texas and has not coached since.

Recruiting has also slid along with fan attendance at Kenan Stadium. UNC hadn't ranked worse than 32nd nationally or fifth in the ACC from 2013-18. In both of those seasons, North Carolina finished inside the top 10 of the final AP Poll.

After two 1-win seasons, he turned the Tar Heels around, leading them to eight winning seasons, including three with 10 wins and six straight bowl games. He left after the regular-season finale against Duke to take over at Texas and missed a 42-3 win against Virginia Tech in the Gator Bowl.

On Sunday, Tom Luginbill, an ESPN college football analyst, and Kirk Bohls, a longtime columnist at the Austin American-Statesman, each indicated that Brown could be the next man in line for the vacant head coaching job at North Carolina, where he was the head coach at for 10 seasons prior to being hired at Texas in December 1997. In addition to UNC and Texas, he coached one season at Appalachian State and three at Tulane.
