Nooses found at MS state capitol on eve of special election

The troubling discovery comes the day before a runoff election between Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Mike Espy is set to take place.

The final Senate race of 2018 was expected to be a sleepy affair - a formality, really, with a special election runoff in deep red Mississippi.

Major League Baseball donated to her campaign on November 12 or 13, sources told Yahoo Sports, which would pinpoint the donation to a day or more after she made the hanging remarks.

She said, "We've prayed more than you can imagine - down at the heart of our home, at church, we prayed a few times before we came here".

Trump's mission will be to rally the faithful toward Hyde-Smith, who has faced campaign setbacks after her comments this month about a "public hanging" seemed to allude to Mississippi's tortured history of lynching of African Americans. "She's not the sure thing she was a few weeks ago", said Nathan Shrader, a political science professor at Millsaps College in Jackson, the state's biggest city. Asked about it in a recent debate, Hyde-Smith said she would "certainly apologize" to anyone who was offended, but then pivoted to an attack on her opponent.

The runoff was rocked by the video, in which Hyde-Smith said of a supporter, "If he invited me to a public hanging, I'd be on the front row".

Mr. Trump held a festive, Christmas-themed rally for Hyde-Smith in Biloxi Monday night, and a rally earlier that day for her in Tupelo, 300 miles to the north.

The US president appeared with Hyde-Smith, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, who appointed her to the Senate seat, and Senator Lindsey Graham of SC.

Over the past week, high-profile contributors to the campaign of Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith including Walmart, AT&T, Pfizer, and Major League Baseball have requested a refund after the MS politician's "public hanging" remark sparked outrage.

Two nooses were found hanging at the Mississippi State Capitol on Monday morning around 7:15, according to NBC affiliate WLBT.

With the MS election undecided, Republicans hold 52 of the 100 Senate seats. One of the signs says MS needs a senator "who respects the lives of lynch victims". "I have stood up for you and you know I will continue to stand up for the conservative values of MS".

At the debate with Hyde-Smith, Espy embraced the slogan "Mississippi first", a transparent tribute to Trump, declaring, "Mississippi first means I value MS over everything else - over party, over persons, over everybody".

She also urged voters to disregard polls showing Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith leading by as many as 10 percentage points, pointing to her upset primary win against outgoing Representative Michael Capuano. "They're not putting their best in there, right?" he said.

Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith was appointed to the seat earlier this year after longtime GOP incumbent Thad Cochran stepped down due to health reasons. Trump dubbed Hyde-Smith a "special woman", with Sen.

The comments triggered a political firestorm in a state that has a history of racism and lynchings and was a flashpoint in America's civil rights struggle. However, in our sample we do not see strong signs of such a lopsided turnout in Espy's favor.

Espy said he refused to accept offers of plea deals.

Trump says that when he was young, "other than the blond hair, they said I looked like Elvis". "I was going to vote for Mike Espy anyway".
