Putin greets Saudi crown prince with high-five at G20 summit

Saudi authorities have vehemently denied the crown prince was involved in the murder, although after several story changes Riyadh admitted that Khashoggi was killed at its Istanbul consulate on 2 October.

Khashoggi's killing at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul has strained Saudi Arabia's ties with the West and battered the image overseas of its de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

But the Turkish leader, also attending the G20, was visibly cooler toward the 33-year-old prince and on Saturday directly criticized him for the first time over the killing of Khashoggi, a royal confidant turned critic.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has demanded that Saudi Arabia extradite the suspects in writer Jamal Khashoggi's murder. "Unless the perpetrators are found out, the whole world and the Islamic community shall not be satisfied".

Speaking to reporters in Buenos Aires, Erdogan said that solving the Khashoggi killing would also be in the interest of the Saudi royal family, Reuters reported.

Prince Mohammed apparently sent the electronic messages to aide Saud al-Qahtani, who oversaw the 15-man team that killed Khashoggi, though the report says the content of the messages isn't known.

"Of course, that might be valid from a legal point of view", Erdogan said.

The president has said that the strategic relationship with Saudi Arabia and the benefit to the United States economy from Saudi arms purchases are too important to rupture over the killing of Khashoggi, which he has condemned.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he brought up the Khashoggi issue while at the summit.

Canada has been outspoken on human rights in Saudi Arabia, which has retaliated by breaking off diplomatic relations and vowing to end trade.

Still, MBS sent at least 11 messages to his closest adviser - who oversaw the team that killed Khashoggi - in the hours before and after the journalist's death, according to a classified Central Intelligence Agency assessment seen by the Wall Street Journal.

On Friday, Mrs May delivered a "robust" message to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that the United Kingdom expected his country to co-operate fully with the Turkish probe and to conduct its own investigation in a "credible and transparent" way.

"We suggest renaming the street address of the Saudi Embassy into Jamal Khashoggi Way to be a daily reminder to Saudi officials" that such killings are "totally unacceptable and as an expression of Washington's unstinting support for freedom of the press", the petition states.

"There's no direct evidence linking him to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi", Pompeo told CNN.

The CIA concluded last month that Prince Mohammed ordered the killing, a connection President Donald Trump has sought to cast doubt on.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prince Mohammed later exchanged a high-five and a handshake and laughed heartily as they took seats next to each other in the main meeting room.
