Trump taps William Barr to lead the Justice Department

"Heather Nauert will be nominated for the ambassador to the United Nations", Trump told reporters on his way to Marine One on Friday.

President Donald Trump said Friday he's nominating State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as the next USA ambassador to the United Nations, to replace the outgoing Nikki Haley.

Sen. Jeff Merkley of OR, the top Democrat on a Senate subcommittee that oversees America's relationship with the United Nations, slammed Trump's nomination of Nauert.

Barr previously worked at the Central Intelligence Agency in the 1970s and served in several leadership roles at the Justice Department serving under President George H.W. Bush.

In a brief phone conversation Friday, Barr confirmed he had accepted the president's offer.

While Nauert must still be confirmed by the US Senate, Benjamin said she will easily get the approval of the Republican-controlled chamber. Barr will replace Jeff Sessions, who was sacked last month in connection with the investigation into the alleged Russian meddling in 2016 presidential elections.

Trump has railed against the probe and his Justice Department's supervision of it.

On the other hand, while mostly toeing the administration's line at the state department lectern, she has spoken out strongly in support of journalism, at a time the president has referred to the press as the "enemy of the people", and called for accountability for the massacre of Rohingya civilians by Burmese forces while the administration dithered over whether to call the mass killings a genocide.

"This should never again be allowed to happen to a future President of the United States!" Barr was attorney general between 1991 and 1993, serving in the Justice Department at the same as Mueller did. He is now a lawyer at Kirkland & Ellis.

Gingrich, who worked with Barr during the first Bush administration and knew him for years before, said he is a man of great intelligence and integrity.

Mr. Barr is a proponent of extensive presidential powers.

Trump picked Matthew Whitaker to be acting attorney general after Sessions was sacked last month.

"To be blunt, it's seen as a win simply that it's not Grenell", who is known to share Bolton's "pugilistic approach" to global institution, Gowan said. Mueller was nominated by President George W. Bush in 2001 to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a job he held for 12 years.

Nauert, a former Fox News host with no foreign policy experience, has something in common with many of her peers in the Trump administration: a history of spreading anti-Muslim and Islamophobic comments.

Haley announced in October she would step down at the end of the year from her post at the United Nations, stirring speculation about the popular Republican's political future.

But the Trump administration has hired its fair share of Fox News alumni, 10 so far including Nauert. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said in a statement that Trump had made an "excellent selection", adding, "we look forward to all that she will accomplish at the U.N.as an advocate for freedom, liberty, and human rights".

According to reports, news of the potential appointment of an establishment Republican had been well received by some Democrats and Republicans, but the confirmation process is nevertheless likely to be tough. James Risch, R-Idaho, poised to become chairman of Foreign Relations.
